The NYC CCTV industry is talk of an IP ("Internet Protocol") camera takeover. Yet reports of the death of analog cameras are premature. While some IP or ‘network’ cameras can potentially deliver high definition megapixel images, analog CCTV cameras continue to offer greater efficiency, lower cost and higher overall reliability. Before deciding on IP cameras versus analog, it is advisable to first understand how the technologies work. The differences in both camera technologies and method of video transmission are critical to developing a well planned CCTV solution. It should be noted as manufacturers of both IP and analog cameras, DVRs and NVRs, I have no bias. While the opinions may not be "popular" they are just a statement of facts. It is not a matter of either or, rather use each camera appropriately as needed. They both have their place.

What is the difference between an High Definition (HD) IP camera and analog megapixel CCTV camera?

Megapixel cameras are named for the number of pixels that make up the image. All Megapixel IP cameras or HD have at least 1,000,000 pixels, while a standard resolution analog camera has no more than 345,600 pixels of resolution. Megapixel cameras are ideal for HD or facial and license plate recognition. Most of Megapixel IP cameras have POE function, allowing to transmit both video signal (data) and camera power via a single cable Cat 5E connected to a switch, allowing savings in cabling system installation CCTV. Additionally the video is stored in units called NVR (Network Video Recorder) which can be anywhere in the world.
In conventional CCTV cameras, the video is transmitted over coaxial cable, power must be transmitted by different wiring and images must be recorded locally on a DVR.

What is the difference between an IP camera in HD and megapixel IP camera?

HD cameras are a class of megapixel cameras. All HD cameras are megapixel cameras, but not all megapixel cameras are HD. The maximum resolution of HD is 2.1 megapixels, the megapixel maximum resolution is 16MP The video format is 1280x720 or 1920x1080 HD, Megapixel offers many more formats The aspect ratio is 16:9 HD, compared with 5, 4 or 4:3 in other types of cameras HDTV has quality standards, while only Megapixel specifies the number of pixels.

It is mandatory for Internet access using Megapixel IP camera systems and NVR's?

Not necessary. If the user does not need remote access to your system, do not need an Internet connection.
Megapixel cameras have a special kind of lens or conventional lens can be used? Believe it or not, the lenses also have resolution. This resolution is limited by the glass used. A conventional lens has an approximate resolution of 500,000 pixels. Although there is no standard Megapixel lenses can be found Megapixel lenses to 5,000,000 and 1,000,000 in the center at the edges.
